It’s no stretch of the imagination to think that going into Killer Elite newcomer director Gary McKendry might have felt just a twinge of intimidation, if not by the thought of harnessing the prowess of both Statham and Owen, then certainly by commanding veteran De Niro.
So perhaps it’s this intimidation; coupled with the film’s blinding pace, that lands Elite in the “Good not Great” slot despite the superficial winning trinity tough-guy draw. And even though it also boasts the intrigue and enticements of a “based on a true story” gun-and-run, the end product leaves most of its would be thrills; and indeed a great portion of its intended audience, wondering what might have been from a film boasting three highly prized action guys.
And if wanting more wasn’t an isolated event, the disc extras also provide a certain void. Granted, there are over a dozen deleted scenes – which do provide some added information, but nothing too crucial to be cut – but other than the generic enticement of BD-Live and a few ways to operate the feature via your phone this set is as vacant as the gun clips that riddled the film’s floor.
So with tons of macho bravado, but a pretense that was given the old Heave-Ho, Killer Elite is a full-throttle blur to be sure, but comes up lacking on substance allure.
