Blu-ray/DVD Combo review: A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas

Synopsis ~ Following years of growing apart, Harold Lee (Cho) and Kumar Patel (Penn) have replaced each other with new friends and are preparing for their respective Yuletide celebrations. But when a mysterious package mistakenly arrive at Kumar’s door on Christmas Eve, his attempts to redirect it to Harold’s house ends with the “high grade” contents – and Harold’s father-in-law’s prize Christmas tree – going up in smoke. With his in-laws out of the house for the day, Harold decides to cover his tracks, rather than come clean. Reluctantly embarking on another ill-advised journey with Kumar, through New York City, their search for the perfect replacement tree takes them through party heaven – and almost blows Christmas Eve sky high.

Mixing seasonal spirits with stoner laughs, A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas; and indeed the entire H&K franchise, is largely comedy made by stoners, for stoners, and while other stoner ventures tend to wallow under the delusion that low-brow laughs equals cash cow smash, what Cho and Penn deliver is far more genuine than most… which is why all three films garner what I like to call legitimate laughs.
Most shoddy-pot comedies these days are helmed by filmmakers who undoubtedly take anything and everything humorously submitted, dumb it down, and pass it off as “under the influence” comedic gold.
But where Harold and Kumar succeed is that; aside from grabbing up some amazing comedy cohorts, they know their audience and therefore know exactly which buttons to push… and push them they do.
The extras bring more great fun and the talents of the underutilized Thomas Lennon, whom you may recall from a little show called Reno 911! Lennon dominates the extras with a nine minute rant covering everything from Drugs to Dickens. There is also a respectable segment covering the creation of the Claymation sequence, and a few random Deleted Scenes finish out the gift giving.
So with a prerequisite promise that you must be at least this high to fully enjoy this ride, A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas brings high-spirited hijinks to every good girl and boy.
