Blackfinger-"Blackfinger (2014 Church Within Records)

The last recorded evidence of Eric Wagner's existence came back in 2007 on Trouble's "Simple Mind Condition". Fans of the legendary doom band would be saddened to learn of Eric's departure in 2008. The voice that fronted the doom machine would be silenced and unheard for some time. Rejoice, for Doompa is back January 31, 2014 with Blackfinger. There has been buzz and hype for well over a year for this albums release, after the single "All The Leaves Are Brown" was released digitally in 2011.At times I wondered if this release would only be heard when it was pried from Eric's cold dead hands many many years down the line.Teasers were brought to a new level in September , when I had the chance to speak with Eric before The Skull played a show here in the Cleveland area, and he was excited and talking release dates.

The album starts of with "I Am Jon", with Wagner's signature low toned voice and slow build, leading up to that slow paced low end coming in allowing Eric to open up and give that classic delivery. The album flows smoothly between tracks, mixing up heavier melodic songs and the lighter side of Blackfinger. Rico Bianchi and Doug Hakes play a mean guitar. Soulful hooks, and masterful solos are plentiful throughout the albums entirety.Bassist Ben Smith and drummer Larry Piatz bring the thunder when needed, and pull it back when the heavy isn't required. The music, with Eric's vocals wrapped around it, brings out many emotions and will paint many different pictures in the listeners mind. Ole Doompa is the Bob Ross of mindscapes.

Overall, I give "Blackfinger" a 10 out of 10, and for many reasons. The first being the triumphant return of Eric Wagner. The second being it would have been very easy for Eric to try and recycle the Trouble way of doing things. Eric, and more importantly Blackfinger are themselves. There are no Trouble lite tracks. Eric proves, as he always has, that he is a very soulful and thought provoking lyricist. Tracks that really stand out on the album are "I Am Jon", "Yellowood", which is also the lead single from the album and will be released to radio on December 16, 2013. Doom Minions around the world, tell all that will listen, The Voice is back.
