Black Books: 'Aquarena' (2013)

"Aquarena" by Black Books is a Psychedelic Alternative Rock EP.

The opening track (entitled: 'Favorite Place') starts things off based around a strong and fuzzy beat, "Favorite Place" is probably the most upbeat of this EP, and is a very solid start.

As the other songs unwind the listener is treated to experimental synths that swim around traditional song structures and trippy sounding guitars that form otherworldly arrangements. This might otherwise get tiresome in such whooping portions, but fortunately Black Books had the sense to add lots of refrains for much needed mental breaths.

Songs tend to be on the long side, choosing to jam out and explore every corner of an idea.

There style really reminds me of Flaming Lips (especially in tracks like "For All The People"), I'm sure genuine expert fans of the genre would consider that a pretty broad comparison, but it's just what it makes me think of.

"Aquarena" by Black Books is available via their Bandcamp page.
