Approximately five miles east of downtown, is the largest locally protected district in Indianapolis, known as Irvington. The area is known for its locally owned restaurants and businesses, but breweries haven’t had a presence here. Approximately a year ago a group of recent graduates from the local law school decided to use their education to build a business instead of practicing law. The business became Black Acre Brewing Company which was established in the heart of Irvington.
After meeting Jordan Gleason, one of Black Acre’s founders, while working part-time at a local restaurant, it became clear that the team at Black Acre had ambitions to serve the public. The thought was the bring a brewery to Irvington and provide a upscale environment at a relatively low cost to the consumer. A year after their initial opening, it’s been concluded that they have succeeded. Let’s take a look at the brewery to get an understanding why it’s so popular.
Location is always a critical part of the equation and the team at Black Acre understood that from the beginning. They ultimately chose the location at 5632 East Washington Street, which is in the heart of the Irvington district. This provides visibility in a picturesque setting. On-street parking is available along with a private parking lot in the rear of the complex.
Inside the establishment wood is prevalent throughout. The natural look and feel within the restaurant is consistent with the entire neighborhood. The bar area is an ideal size for the brewery and the dining area provides plenty of space between tables. This is not a sports bar, so televisions won’t be seen here. Black Acre is a conversational brewery, which makes this location a hot spot for socializing in the neighborhood.
The brewery is a restaurant as well. It’s equipped with a fully functional kitchen, specializing in a small plate items. Several choices including the ‘Pastrami Ruben’ which comes with fermenti artisan sauerkraut, swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing on rye bread can be obtained for under $10.00. Combining the food offerings with their specialty craft beers including the ‘Trulock’; is a great way to close out a case.
After spending some time conversing with the customers inside the establishment, it was clear that customer service was a large influence. The customers really enjoyed being engaged by the staff and the trivia host on this particular Wednesday evening. After assessing the establishment and evaluating the customer based jury, the verdict was finally in; the Black Acre Brewing Company has successfully established a new bar.
