Country artist Billy Currington brought his 2013 tour to the Orpheum Theater in Madison, Wis., on Friday, Oct. 11. The veteran star is touring on his first new music in three years, having released "We Are Tonight" a few weeks ago. The albums lead single, "Hey Girl" topped country radio and Currington drew a crowd that filled the theater.
On the eve of the Wisconsin Badgers homecoming game against Northwestern coupled with opening night of UW Hockey, downtown Madison was teeming with people enjoying what was likely the last temperate weekend of 2013. The traffic and large crowds didn't stop country fans from converging upon the Orpheum to enjoy Currington's first appearance at the historic theater.
Currington appeared quite playful on stage, freely interacting with the crowd and his band throughout the show. He opened with "I Got A Feelin'" from his debut album. Moving through "Wingman" and "That's How Country Boys Roll," fans were fully involved in a sing-along while toasting the singer with their tallboys held high above their heads. Their actions were a perfect segue into "Pretty Good At Drinkin' Beer."
Early into his set Currington turned and looked for his dog, Paco, who was let loose on stage. He smiled and told the crowd, "If there's one thing I've learned, ain't nobody gonna love me like this here dog. He's been on the road with me for the past seven years, since he was a pup." As he meandered between both sides of the stage, performing "Like My Dog," his faithful Paco trotted behind the singer for the duration of the song.
"Swim In Sunshine" was an apt song for the unseasonably warm fall. The tail end of his set included a number of covers by Stevie Wonder, "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," and "Family Tradition" by Hank Williams Jr. He closed out his show with "We Are Tonight."
A four-song encore ensued that began with a trio of quirky pop covers. "Moving On Up," the theme song from The Jeffersons was followed by Daft Punk's "Get Lucky." He concluded the show with Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" before ending the evening with one of his biggest hits, "Good Directions." Currington's show offered a great start to the weekend.
