It takes a lot to shut me up. Seriously. As a foodie, I’m constantly jabbering while I eat, talking about what is good and what could have been better. My mother would be appalled to know that I frequently smack and talk at the same time.
But after biting into Big Mama’s Big Bub "Rib Killer" Sandwich for the first time, this talker was at a loss for words. This has to be the best bar-b-que sandwich I have ever tasted. Ever. Being a native from Mississippi, I have come across a vast amount of good BBQ. But nothing could have prepared me for the mouth-watering BBQ sauce or the buttery toasted bread that Big Mama’s Rib Killer was served on. And the ribs were so tender they barely stayed on the bun. My dinner companion felt the same. The sandwich was served with a one side and priced at $6.95.
Big Mama’s menu focuses on “soul food” and there you can find homemade candied yams, greens, chitterlings, and a wide array of fish, chicken and pork. When the plate was first put in front of me, I slightly scoffed. Soul food? The plate wasn’t brimming from every corner with delectable! There was still room between my sandwich and my macaroni and cheese! Again, one bite of those ribs shut me up quickly.
Our waiter was a nice gentleman who was attentive and had a bit of a sense of humor. After coming back to collect our empty plates, he exclaimed, “Wow! Good job!” It would have seemed silly at any other establishment, but since we were able to conquer the Rib Killer sandwich, we did have a sense of pride.
Big Mama’s dim-lit atmosphere is a bit drab for the colorful food that adorns its menus. There are options to watch sports and get a drink from the bar, which may make the medium sized restaurant come alive when more traffic comes through.
Vibes aside, if you are looking for some of the best BBQ this side of the Mississippi and are hoping not to break the bank, make sure your next stop is Big Mama’s.
