Beyond the Trees: Stories of Wisconsin Forests

From the road, one group of trees looks like any other, right? So how do you distinguish one forest from another?

It’s the question I’ve been tackling for the last two years, as I traveled around Wisconsin, exploring all of Wisconsin’s national and state forests. And what I discovered was that each one has its own personality.

The result of these Wisconsin travels has been compiled in my book Beyond the Trees: Stories of Wisconsin Forests.

But not only does the flora and fauna of each of our forests make them distinctive, it’s also the people who live in them, work in them, and care for them. You’ll hear from — among others — former forest fire-tower lookouts, river guides, naturalists, and people who were there when a forest was “born.”
