Better with Age: A review of Bulleit 10 Bourbon

Bulleit Bourbon recently released their highly-anticipated Bulleit 10, aged 10 years as opposed to the traditional five to eight. The extra years created a smoother, richer, more complex bourbon with delicate floral notes and an oaky aroma with hints of vanilla and dried fruit. And after ten long, highly-anticipated years Bulleit 10 is now available to consumers.

So how does the long-awaited bourbon taste?

Upon opening the bottle, a strong bourbon odor can be detected that’ll put hair in your nostrils, eventually giving way to an oak-y scent with just a hint of sweetness. Taking it straight, I was surprised by its strength. This is definitely one of those alcohols that warms all the way down; as it was travelling down my esophagus an image of Ron Swanson chilling in an overstuffed chair, glass in hand next to a roaring fire crossed my mind. If you want to warm yourself up from the inside out on a blustery winter day, consider taking a healthy swallow. Or two.

This stuff is definitely intended for more experienced bourbon and whiskey drinkers. If I were a dude, pretty sure it would put hair on my chest (not just in my nostrils). I added a few droplets of water to mellow out the alcohol burn and so I could better appreciate the flavor. In my opinion doing so allowed the complexity of the bourbon to shine, the earthy, oak-y, smoky flavor with sweeter hints of vanilla and caramel better showcased. The oak and rye flavors definitely dominate, but don’t overwhelm, and commingle with the sweet notes to strike a complex yet harmonious balance.

If you’re a Bulleit Bourbon drinker, you’ll be impressed with how just a few more years of aging has enhanced the flavor, creating a smoother, more complex bourbon.

If you’re a Bulleit fan, get your hands on a bottle of this special release while you can.
