This review is part of a recap of this reviewer's picks for the Best YA Books of 2013.

Cassandra Clare's readers know to brace themselves for the worst when they open one of her books, especially the last book in a series. They know anything can happen; any character could be killed off -- or worse. (It is fiction, after all. There are fates worse than death.)

And while Clockwork Princess, the final book in Clare's Infernal Devices trilogy, bears plenty of heartbreak, it is also one of the most glorious and satisfying conclusions to a series the YA world has seen to date.

Clare masterfully navigates the murky world of love triangles in a completely new light, showing readers a very different approach to loving more than one person. But in the midst of the tangled romantic lives of her main characters, Clare deftly concludes the mythology of Tessa's existence, and the ongoing battle that began in the first book, Clockwork Angel.

Fans of Clare's books will delight seeing the interconnectedness of her Shadowhunter world, which goes deeper in this book than perhaps any of her others to date.

Readers have more anxiety ahead in 2014, as Clare prepares to conclude another one of her Shadowhunter series, The Mortal Instruments. But in the meantime, fans can rest easy knowing that at least Clockwork Princess was a masterful conclusion to Clare's brilliant steampunk historical trilogy.

Clockwork Princess is in stores now. Here is the official synopsis:

Danger and betrayal, secrets and enchantment in the breathtaking conclusion to the Infernal Devices trilogy.

Tessa Gray should be happy – aren't all brides happy? Yet as she prepares for her wedding, a net of shadows begins to tighten around the Shadowhunters of the London Institute.

A new demon appears, one linked by blood and secrecy to Mortmain, the man who plans to use his army of pitiless automatons, the Infernal Devices, to destroy the Shadowhunters. Mortmain needs only one last item to complete his plan. He needs Tessa. And Jem and Will, the boys who lay equal claim to Tessa's heart, will do anything to save her.
