Best romantic-drama of the 90s 'Bodyguard,' RIP Ms. Houston 1963-2012

1992, R

Starring: Whitney Houston, Kevin Costner, Bill Cobbs

One of my favorite romantic-drama-thrillers of all time has to be “The Bodyguard,” including its fantastic soundtrack that you can bust out time and time again, and have a great sing-a-long.  You can’t really compare many singers to Whitney Houston, as there is only one distinct power-voice, Rest in Peace Ms. Whitney, 1963-2012.

The film centers on Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston, “The Preachers Wife,” “Sparkle” – a re-make not yet released; summer 2012) who is a female singing sensation-dancer that is being stalked.  A former secret service bodyguard (Costner) is called upon by Devaney (Bill Cobbs, “Random Hearts,” “Ghosts of Mississippi”) who plays a close friend and staff member of Marron’s believes the house in unsafe, and thinks Marron (Houston) needs more protection.  Her current team isn't too bright (a Brit, Sy Spector PR guy (Will Kemp) and an overweight/out of shape wannabe tough guy (Mike Starr, “Dumb and Dumber”) who really isn’t doing much bodyguarding).

Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner, “Message in a Bottle,” “Dances with Wolves”) has hesitations of being a celebrity bodyguard, but the pay is good, and he agrees to stop by the estate of Ms. Marron.  He quickly realizes Devaney (Cobbs) is right, Marron is in great danger, and the house security system is worthless.  Even though Marron (Houston) is insistent that she doesn’t need a bodyguard, she soon begins falling in love with Frank, gives in, and is okay with him staying to protect her.

This film is a classic in it's genre.  It shows how awesome, and yet terrifying it can be to be in the limelight.  It also was Houston’s film debut, and is a memorable movie, and soundtrack.  And Costner and Houston sure make a nice duo.

If you've never seen it, you are missing out, and if you have it, take it out, and pay your respects to recently passed, Ms. Whitney Houston.
