Best of 2011: Cianide - Gods of Death

The Chicago doom-death warlords return with a mature album that shows a variety of moods, all of which converge on the idea of a morbid strength to metal itself. These bounding, raging and cavernous tunes hollow out the soul and replace its confused underconfidence with a sense of purpose. While the band experiments somewhat, they keep to their signature style, but without imitating themselves as most retro bands do. A potent effort.
