Best luggage storage options for small spaces

Collapsible luggage

You don’t have to be a New York apartment dweller to know how precious storage space is. Several luggage companies have developed new styles designed to maximize storage space for small dwellings or long stays in tiny hotel rooms.

Biaggi’s exclusive hinge lock technology allows the unique folding with four wheels instead of the standard two wheels.

If you are a frequent traveler with a shortage of storage space, how about luggage you can collapse to less than six inches deep? The seven-piece Road Warrior M series collection, a division of Trunk & Trolley Inc., does just that.

The bags, available in three styles, won first place in the Travel Good Association’s Product Innovation Awards.

The collection uses what’s called “revolutionary space-saving technology” with six foldable uprights. This patent-pending “Micro-PoP” design allows any of its pieces, which range in depth from 9” to 16,” to reduce to less than 6” when collapsed quickly and easily with the pull of the molded red ripcords. It only requires half the storage space of a conventional upright and comes with its own storage sleeve, making it easy to stow in the closet, under the bed or on a shelf.

“This innovative, patent-pending technology called Micro-PoP™ allows luggage to fully collapse to half its depth–half the size of traditional upright luggage–where it can be easily stored under conventional bed frames,” says Road Warrior™ Luggage President Sammy Sitt. “Its proprietary articulating walls and technologically advanced materials with high strength-to-weight ratio, give the strength and support to withstand every consumer’s needs.”

A test of the 24” piece proved easy to open and close. To collapse, simply open the bag and pull the molded red ripcord-like pulls. With one quick pull from the outside handles, it automatically locks back into the full size. In addition to its standard size it can fully expand another two inches. Made of ballistic nylon fabric, this luggage is perfect for the seasoned or occasional traveler.

New luggage manufacturer Biaggi’s space-saving luggage collection differentiates itself by using “spinners,” four swiveling wheels.

When this bag is empty you can stash it flat under a bed, behind a door, or on a low shelf. The four-wheel spinner design makes the luggage easy to roll and prevent it from tipping over, and both the interior and exterior are made of high-quality, durable materials. The side handle is very convenient for lifting the bag. Biaggi’s exclusive hinge lock technology allows the unique folding with four wheels instead of the standard two wheels. Biaggi is available in four styles, covering the range from totes and carry-ons to suitcases and duffel bags.

Lipault was first with this trend, debuting collapsing luggage at The 2011 Travel Goods Show, and it was back this year with its. They’re two-wheelers, in suitcase and duffel configurations in three sizes each, with Lipault’s very French fashion sensibility — that’s forward-looking, very much in vogue, in bright, loud, confident colors.

The Lipault 0% Foldable Luggage is ultra-light for wheeled bags, weighing five to eight pounds. The handle expands to the perfect height, the wheels are smooth, there’s soft padded handles for when you want to carry the bag instead of roll it, and there’s outside pockets perfect for storing shoes or dirty clothing and inside pockets for toiletries or small items.

Unlike most soft-sided bags, the Lipault 0% has a hard flap that you can fold down on the bottom to help protect your items and keep the bag’s shape. The material, constructed of nylon twill, comes in fun colors like orange and plum (and also standard black and blue). The bags, which also come with clear, 4” deep polyurethane storage bags, is very luxurious feeling and durable, plus it repels water and dirt and wipes clean of general baggage-hold grime.

From Tumi’s T-Tech Accessories Collection ($55) by L.C. Industries is the Packable Backpack, an 8 x 10 x 18-inch bag that unfolds from a compact pouch to a travel backpack. With zippered main compartment, front pocket and adjustable arm straps, the backpack, in charcoal or rust, folds flat and zips closed when not in use.
