Many small towns in the Midwest have hometown restaurants that can be well-kept secrets --except to the locals that is. One worth bragging about to the public in the Dayton, Ohio, area is West Milton's Brick House Cafe. Located smack in the middle of the downtown, the Brick House Cafe's owner Jolene Johnson has remodeled the historic West Milton Record newspaper office into a cozy spot for breakfast or lunch.
Established in 2006 the small restaurant is always packed, with waitresses scurrying to serve customers and take phone orders for carry-outs. Service is cheerful and quick. Menu entrees are under $10 for the budget conscious. Don't expect greasy spoon fare. The cuisine is elegant and something a larger fine dining establishment in an urban area would be proud to serve.
Grilled cheese is on the menu, but so is a to-die-for Reuben and a beef brisket marinated in their own secret sauce. Little people with less discerning appetites can order PB&J, weight conscious diners can select from a variety of specialty salads. Don't miss trying the broccoli crunch salad whether as a full course or a side. A full range of specialty drinks add pizzazz to the usual coffee, tea or soft drinks, and you can choose iced or blended drinks or fruit smoothies. Dessert in a drink for the dieter? Try their sugar-free caramel, chocolate, hazelnut, vanilla or white chocolate blends.
The Brick House Cafe is open Tuesday-Friday, 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. and Saturdays 6 a.m. - 2 p.m. Closed Sundays and Mondays. Located at 2 S. Miami Street (Route 48 north of Dayton), parking is located across the street or behind the restaurant. A terrace with limited seated is available in the summer.
The Brick House Cafe also does catering and has won an excellent reputation locally serving receptions, teas and other festivities. See the website for pricing and menu. http://www.brickhousecafe.net/
