Maybe you’re just beginning to learn a child’s “quirks”. The things unique to him...triggers that bring about certain behaviors. Maybe you’re trying to figure out why she keeps getting up from the table, having a difficult time lining up, fidgety, yawning excessively or chewing on her shirt. Special Education teachers may know the answers to these questions, but should you be a mainstream teacher a quick answer may be more difficult. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have an easy resource you could thumb through to find the quick answer to the behavior, giving you a better idea of what to do to help your student?

Beth Aune (OTR/L), Beth Burt (special needs mom and advocate) and Peter Gennaro (Director of Special Education) have teamed up to develop such a book, “Behavior Solutions for the Inclusive Classroom”. Quite simply, in the general education setting, where inclusion is increasing, teachers are now witnessing new behaviors that maybe telltale signs of a sensory processing disorder, an avoidance behavior, or more. This book has been developed for those teachers. See a behavior, grab your book, and look it up. It’s that simple.

The best thing about this book, is that not only is it developed for teachers, but it’s helpful for parents as well. I found myself look specifically at “Out-of-Seat Behaviors” for my daughter who does this, finding any reason to do so. I used the suggestions, changed them for the home setting, and within minutes turned a frustrating daily occurrence into a successful happening for both of us. The simplicity in which the chapters are divided (Movement Issues, Avoidance and Retreat Behaviors, Difficulty with Routine and Social-Emotional Issues, along with tools in the Appendix’s) and the straight forward solutions makes it the perfect quick reference behavior book for the general education classroom.

"Behavior Solutions for the Inclusive Classroom” by Beth Aune, Beth Burt and Peter Gennaro can be found at Future Horizons, Amazon, Barnes and Nobel and Borders book stores.
