Beauty & the Beast 3D (Rated G)
- Voiced by Paige O'Hara, Robbie Benson
- Directed by Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise
- Plot: The classic fairy tale is brought to life as a young girl who sacrifices her freedom to save her father when he is imprisoned by a beast.
In the midst of Disney's Renaissance period of the late 1980's and early 1990's, Disney released the first animated film to become nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The film opens with a back story where we learn about a young prince who is transformed into a beast after an sorceress finds he has no love in his heart. He has until the last petal falls from an enchanted rose to learn to love and be loved in return. After her father is taken captive in the Beast's castle, Belle sacrifices her freedom to save him. Once in the castle, she and the Beast both begin to see the world in a different way.
While the 3D was an unnecessary edition, it was a thrill to see the movie on the big screen again. The colors are gorgeous and the film is a Disney classic for a reason. The animation, voice talents, and music are just as amazing as ever (although after seeing the Broadway show several times, I had forgotten that my favorite songs are in the live show – not the movie).
I love the fact that Disney is bringing back these wonderful films to the theater again, so that I can share them with my son the way they were intended to be seen. The next film on the agenda to get a 3D rerelease is Finding Nemo which is scheduled to be in theaters this fall.
The movie is five stars - the 3D is 3 stars.
