There are very few books that have become movies that have been just as good if not better. You will always get at least one person who will say “the book was better.” I can honestly say I don’t know anyone who has read “Beautiful Creatures” or any in the book series. I was able to go into this with an open mind without any biases.
Based on the book with the same name by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, “Beautiful Creatures” takes us to Gatlin, South Carolina. A boy named Ethan Wate lives with his dad who is a total shut in after his mother passed away. Ethan wishes nothing more than to get done with high school and leave the town forever. During the summer a new girl named Lena Duchannes moved into the Ravenwood house which is a family who believe in Satan.
Ethan instantly falls for Lena who wants nothing to do with anyone. After she finally lets her guard down and starts being friends and a little bit more, she tells Ethan about who she is. Lena is from a family of powerful witches and is a young witch herself. At the age of 16, like other witches, she will have to decide whether she will be a good witch or a bad witch. For some reason for girls it is a much bigger decision than it is for boys.
Lena really just wants to lead a normal life with Ethan and not have to worry about anything until she turns 16. She thinks that being with him will cancel the curse that has been put on her family by a great relative of theirs. With her birthday getting closer and her feelings for Ethan getting stronger, she doesn’t feel that she has the power to decide which side to take.
“Beautiful Creatures” is 124 minutes to long, which is the running time of the movie. It felt like I was in the same seat watching a new twist on the “Twilight” saga except this time, instead of vampires and werewolves it was witches. Everything is the same with the whole teen angst. I have no idea why they kept bringing up this curse half way through the movie to add something else to it. Also, somehow Ethan gets powers or something because he is able to block some “block spell” Lena’s mom, grandma and whoever Macon is to her that is never explained.
They brought in Jeremy Irons as Macon Ravenwood and also brought in Emma Thompson to give some star power to the movie but failed. Iron’s tried to give his best southern accent but you can still hear his English accent. The only good thing I can really say about this is Alden Ehrenreich who plays Ethan is a better actor than Kristen Stewart.
If you have read the book then I guess go see the movie but it is not worth it. It was a long movie and it felt long and like I said, I felt like I was watching a new version of “Twilight”. It was a bad movie but not the worst movie I’ve seen this year, but it will be on my list for worst, have no doubt.
