Musicians find inspiration and influences from far and wide, for their brass-tastic set at the Jazzhaus, Beans and Cornbread cooked up a New Orleans' style jazz show that blew away the crowd. The big band's powerful sound created a full night of funky tunes, both originals and covers, that the audience loved.
Beans and Cornbread is a Topeka band of jazz and funk artists burning with energy. Throughout the set the musicians played a variety of instruments, some switching between bongos and trombone, others singing or playing the trumpet. The band combined a pair of trombones, trumpets, a saxophone - the famous Gravy of FUTURE SHOCK - and a drummer backing them up. Guitar and bass found their place with the band, adding some chords and harmony to the loud, proud brass. They even busted out a sousaphone for some songs. The first set was a blaring shot of jazz to the face. A medium-sized crowd stuck around through intermission, eager for more.
Vocals from Eric Padilla and Robert Kilpatrick brought the music together with their slick, clever lyrics and perfect renditions of cover songs. Adding extra charisma and humor to the show, the singers kept the crowd's attention throughout the band's two sets. The second set was even more jazzy and fun than the first. Even the old local celebrity Whiteowl made an appearance, dancing and strutting across the dance floor.
The thursday night show was a fantastic example of New Orleans' style jazz, which drew a mixed crowd of party people, music lovers and all the characters sticking around Lawrence this summer. Beans and Cornbread fit right in at the Jazzhaus and ought to play the venue again soon.
