It's been a rough and tumble 2012! We all need a break and the year has just begun! Granny Judy's Kitchen, 71 North Main st., Franklin, NH, had been on my radar for sometime, yet there never seemed to be enough time.
So in homeage to my recently passed Grandmother, I took myself out for some breakfast R & R. Quickly put, my Grandmother kept a dish rage on a paperclip hanging from the smoke detector. That is the only example of her cooking ability that seems to cover it all. Yet, she did teach much through her lack of culinary delighting; never trust a skinny cook, if you're happy eat, if you're sad eat, all you need to know about life can be found around the breakfast table and most importantly, never turn down a free meal.
When I waltzed into Granny Judy's Kitchen I felt immediately like I had been jetted back in time. Plastic table covers, plaid. Throw away salt and pepper shakers. Down home rumors from the locals. Today I put the kitchen to the test! Ordering very runny but defintely cooked eggs atop a wheat english muffin grilled not toasted with corned beef hash browned around the edges set like a birthday candle upon the other layers of food. Note to the kitchen Mr. Waiter, I wish to make my eggs run it's a personal thing. Don't bring them to me already broken!
It did not look like Judy had been in the kitchen, perhaps her stout husband. Yet, I've always said, give me a well seasoned line cook over a culinary art's honor student any day of the week! My request arrived at the table piping hot, fresh off the flat top and the eggs were still intact. Granny Judy's Kitchen pulled me out of my funk. Brought back childhood memories of indigestioin and Gram's cooking. More importantly, I left with a full stomach, a smile, comforted and paid less than I would had I bought two large fancy coffee's at Dunkin Donuts. Gram's always loved a bargain!
