Baker & Spice: More than just a bakery (Photos)

There's something about the aroma of baked goods and coffee that puts one in a great mood. At Baker & Spice in SW Portland's Hillsdale neighborhood, they've been putting lots of folks in this state of mind for 15 years. Baker & Spice began life as a much loved and coveted stand at the Hillsdale Farmers Market in 1998 (still going strong directly behind Baker & Spice). The demand was so vast for their savory scones, billowy breads and crunchy cookies; Baker & Spice took the plunge and opened their doors in 2005.

Not only does Baker & Spice have morning worshipers, they have a following all day long. The long lines (but quick service) attest to that. During the lunch hour their menu frequently changes, often times having vegan and gluten-free items. And what says comfort better than soup? Soups are out of this world here. Some of the latest choices were stick-to-your-ribs Tuscan White Bean soup, the oh-so sublime Curried Lentil soup and a Carrot-Tahini and Corn Chowder with Roasted Poblanos. Pair with an Applewood Smoked Ham and Gruyere sandwich on a baguette with European butter and Dijon and this is the stuff of dreams. Baker & Spice bakes everything from scratch using original recipes with traditional methods and the highest quality ingredients.
