The reality is B Too, another Top Chef venue on 14th Street, is not the best for vegetarians. Frankly, the dinner menu does not feature a single vegetarian main course. Sure, they can create something for you on the spot, or you can always order several sides (a pet peeve of all vegetarians) but aside from that there is not much. And the items they create on the spot (risotto) are largely a disappointment, clearly thrown together at the last minute.
The brunch/lunch menu is slightly better, with omelets, fried eggs, and sweet waffles, but still is not ideal.
Surprisingly, the restaurant week menu was far more pleasing than the regular menu. For appetizers, there was a summer gazpacho and a gorgeous fig salad. The beautiful presentation of the salad was only surpassed by the delicious flavors of the fresh greens, sweet figs, and tart goat cheese. Enjoyed with a hunk of their hearty bread, it could be a meal in and of itself. For a main course option was the savory ratatouille waffle, which consisted of a lovely soft waffle served with beautiful seasonal tomatoes, frisee salad, and a flavorful sauce.
Dessert was a disappointment, the choice was between marinated melon or an apple tart which appeared rustic and hearty, but was cold and lacked the gooey texture and cinnamon flavor of well made apple desserts.
Ultimately, B should update their regular menu to include the appetizers and main course items they featured for restaurant week. One thing which is on their menu that is a winner however is their perfect Belgian fries. Served with a spicy aioli, a sinfully delicious saffron aioli, and a homemade mayonnaise, you may just want to order a separate basket per person. They are that good, which makes sense considering they are fried twice!
Service is great, except perhaps on weekends when servers can’t seem to keep up with the crowd. Prices are quite high; over $10 for appetizers and over $22 for entrees.
