LA band, Smallpools may have pulled in the larger most enthusiastic crowd for Popscene’s Club Night at Rickshaw Stop on Aug 8 but in a line-up that also showcased Aussie band, Cloud Control and Brooklyn band, Savoir Adore, it’s the latter band that left the biggest impression.
In a night where all three groups had one theme in common – dreams, Smallpools catchy hit, “Dreaming”; Savoir Adore’s “Dreamers”; and Cloud Control’s sophomore follow-up album, “Dream Cave”; it was Savoir Adore’s sweetened melodies that lingered and lulled us to bed that night.
Indie rockers, Cloud Control from the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Australia took to the stage first, buzzing with their latest, “Dojo Rising”. In 2010 their debut album, the jangly folk-blend and fuzzy guitar jamboree, “Bliss Release” gained accolades and scored them tours with the Foo Fighters and Vampire Weekend on tours in their homeland.
Since then, the band have moved to the UK and recorded “Dream Cave” there with legendary producer, Barny Barnicott. Franz Ferdinand, the Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian are some of the now successful bands that have experienced Barnicott's midas touch. Here, he gives Cloud Control ample space to experiment with a heavier layered sound, and “Dream Cave” with its electronica of loops, reverbs and synths is very listenable though never overtly memorable.
On stage as Alister Wright sings of his personal failings on “Dojo Rising”, band mate, Heidi Lenffer in a fetching leopard print jumpsuit hits the keyboards; sibling, Ulrich is on drums; and Jeremy Kelshaw on bass. They filter each of their varying musical tastes with hints of the Beastie Boys and Weezer over a likeable synth-pop wash. And then tear through the set with “The Smoke The Feeling”, “Scar”, do-wops for “Gold Canary” off their first album and the moody, “Promises”, all with characteristic tight vocal harmonies and musicianship.
When they get to “Nothing In The Water”, their last song on the scheduled set list, Kelshaw reckons they have performed so quickly, that they will have a chance to sing a bonus song and with glee they decide to end on an old favorite. They hit their stride here as all four seem to be firing and all cylinders looking like they were having the best time.
