SO! As part of my company Cado Motus Derby USA I occasionally need to test out products before I start selling them. I mean how can I recommend and sell something that I have no knowledge about. It's not my style. Everything I sell via Cado Motus Derby is something I have tried at least once. So when asked about Atom Gear I had no clue. There was a lot of hoopla about it the gear without exposed hard caps and lack of padding. I am a skabs gear and am religious about wearing knee gaskets so I couldn't really tell people anything about Atom Gear aside from what i had heard.
I decided to get some sent to me to try so I can maybe know what I'm selling. There will be a series of articles reviewing the Atom Knee and Elbow pads as I work with them this season.
First impression when I put them on was that these were some very compact but comfy knee pads. I felt even more like Robocop as i marched around my room getting used to the feel of the knee pads. The new version of the Elite Atom Knee pads come with a detachable/attachable hard cap. I'm not fond of Velcro'd on caps to knee pads in general so I became a tad apprehensive. The Atom Elbow pads felt fine and gave me plenty of mobility. My big first test was our second scrimmage of the season with some of our fav gals the Rocktown Rollers. Atom Knee pads are fitted. You have to measure yourself and order according to your measurements. In Atom knee pads I'm a Medium, in Skabs i was a S/M with knee gaskets under to keep them up. So Plus 1 for the Atom Knee pads for not slipping during play. I had been so used to adjusting and pulling up my knee pads that i caught myself reaching to pull them up and realized I didn't need to. They are also long, WHICH I LOVE! It protected my knee and the top part of my shin leaving me a good 2 inches max to have to protect on my own. Also because they are snug they acted like my knee gasket and helped warm up my knee and added compression throughout the game.
My first Fall... was jarring. I was freaked i would feel it and i would be limping off the floor. That was not the case. There was minimal impact felt and even though i fell into a two knee fall, the impact seemed to distribute through the whole knee pad.
All in all i liked these knee pads. One warning!
After you warm up, loosen the bottom straps on the knee pad or else you will get calf cramps you wouldn't believe!
I learned my lesson on that one.
Review one = Two thumbs up for the atom knee pads. The elbow .. were pretty good i didn't fall on an elbow this time around but they felt pretty protected and no slippage.
