Wait a minute, what the hell is Sochi? Well it's reputed to be Russia's largest resort city, with a population over 300,000, Sochi, is located in the Caucasus region on the Eastern shore of the Black Sea.

Hmm...and why did the IOC picked Sochi anyway? During selection time came in Guatemala City in 2007, the Russian contingent reportedly pulled out all the stops, including; a full-size skating rink in the world's largest airplane, and a speech in English by Vladimir Putin his first ever in public. In the final round of voting, Russia managed to edge out the South Koreans, 51 to 47.

Now, as if there were any questionable doubt, Russia is back after seven years of building to this moment of a opening of what is believed to be the most expensive Olympic Games in history. This made for TV games is sole meant to showcase the new Russia but nothing so far suggests this will be a feel good, joyful festival event.

Not at an estimated cost topping $51 billion U.S dollars, Compared to the $8 billion spent for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, making the Sochi games the most expensive Olympics in history, exceeding the estimated $44 billion cost of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

And where did all that money go? Tourist infrastructure: $2.6 billion,Olympic venues: $500 million,Transport infrastructure: $270 million...Power supply infrastructure: $100 million, included also of course modernizing satellite uplink communication to Americas own NBC as well as other countries watching the event world wide live.

All so that 98 events can be competed on, with a number of new competitions, a total in all of 12 accounting for gender. Will be held during the Games, including biathlon mixed relay, women's ski jumping, mixed-team figure skating. Also a mixed-team luge, half-pipe skiing, ski and snowboard slope style, and snowboard parallel slalom.

The events will be held around two clusters of new venues; an Olympic Park constructed in Sochi's Imeretinsky Valley on the coast of the Black Sea, with Fisht Olympic Stadium and the Games' indoor venues located within walking distance, and snow events in the resort settlement of Krasnaya Polyana.

Opening scheduled rounds included figure skating, skiing, and snowboard competitions which were held, before the Opening Ceremony,Thursday February 6 2014. Which feature not only the Olympics and 2014 Winter Paralympics which both are being organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOC).It is the first Olympics in Russia since the breakup of the USSR in 1991. After 30 years the USSR was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

It could not have been more stunning, as all eyes were on Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony broadcast live. The sunlight bouncing off crisp, white, mountain peak. While a morning crowd gasped with delight, while watching Briton Billy Morgan and his flying snowboard went spinning beneath an azure sky. A complete delight on Vladimir Putin’s Winter Olympics Thursday, the perfect picture-postcard manner he doubtless always envisaged.

Fridays ceremonies began with a majestic spectacle that included a glowing troika of horses made of light streaking through a snowbound sky, the multicolored onion domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral bobbing in the air; literary references to Gogol, Tolstoy and Nabokov; images of Stalinist skyscrapers; and performances by Russia’s storied ballerinas, musicians and singers.

Turning Russia’s 2014 XXII Olympic Winter Games into a spectacular event.
