You're Next

“You’re Next” is a cleverly plotted and crafted thriller that combines the home invasion and slasher movie genres and turns both on its ear. This is a gory horror flick for those who steer clear of the usual sickening messes that will also surprise and satisfy fans. It will keep you guessing, gasping, occasionally laughing and even cheering with its unexpected and fresh blend of mystery, violence, very black comedy and survivalist action. It is now available on both DVD and through Roanoke Cox Cable’s EPIX On DEMAND.

An immediate double murder by unseen attackers at an expensive and very modern woodland home segues to the Davison family’s country estate. A group of siblings and their significant others tenuously come together to celebrate their parents wedding anniversary and bring along all their baggage overstuffed with grudges and resentment. Their heated arguing and belittling of each other over dinner is interrupted by the chink of broken glass and the thud of a body hitting the floor. A barrage of crossbow fire sends them scrambling to encounter booby traps, jammed cell phones and vicious intruders in bizarre animal masks.

Be warned that “You’re Next” is a bloody mess, but it’s a bloody good one. Even at its goriest, director Adam Wingard presents it with an artistry, restraint and impact transcending the gore-for-the-sake-of-gore of typical splatter films. And abhorrent as the violence is initially, the smartly written character of Erin will have you cheering for much more.

She’s enigmatically portrayed by Australian star Sharni Vinson. This quiet new girlfriend with an air of mystery proves herself to be the most quick thinking of the bunch and the most likely hope for survival. As she makes a stand against the intruders while trying to unravel the who, what, where and why of the situation, we beg for her to bring it on right up to the final gasp conclusion.
