He was part of the late night talk show circuit for five years from 1989 to 1994. For reasons that he only knows, his show went off the air. Arsenio Hall is now hosting a late night talk show again after 19 years. A lot has changed over that span of time. On his first show earlier this week he showed skits of some things that he has done over those years. Of course, most of it was not true, just for laughs. That first show had its moments, but was fairly uneven. His guests were comedian Chris Tucker and rapper Snoop Dogg or Lion depending on which one he wants to use. Paula Abdul made a "surprise" cameo appearance.
Some of the things that Hall did 19 years ago won't go over well today. He seems to want to be that cool and hip guy that he was back then and fit in with the younger crowd. That is fine and well, but the reality is that he isn't part of that group now. You can't throw a party every night and expect people to want to come. It just doesn't work that way. What works for Davis Letterman and Jay Leno may not work for Arsenio Hall. He is a comic and an entertainer and a pretty good interviewer. He just needs to be himself and not try to please everyone because those who don't particularly care for him won't watch any way.
We know what kind of show he did 19 years ago. The question is can he be relevant today? The short answer is yes he can. That is why the television honchos brought him back. Now it is up to Arsenio Hall to deliver. The first week is in the can and now let's see what happens. I wish him well and it would be great if his show this time lasts for 19 years.
