It has been nine years since we’ve seen a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. He’s made cameo appearances in “The Expendables” and “Around the World in 80 Days” but hasn’t had a starring role until now. “Last Stand” is the start of what I think will be the year of old action stars. Bruce Willis has the new “Die Hard” coming out this year and Stallone has “Bullet to the Head”. All we need is Van Damme and Seagal to come out with a movie this year and we’ll be transported back to the 80’s.
In Las Vegas, Agent Bannister gets a team together to transport a drug boss named Gabriel Cortez. During the transport, a group of people free Cortez and get him in a modified show Corvette. In a small town in Arizona by the border, the sheriff notices a couple of people in a diner that seem odd. He runs their license plate and everything comes back clean but he knows something is up. Early in the morning he gets a call from a girl at the diner who informs him the farmer who delivers the milk isn’t there yet. He sends his deputies out to the farmers’ house where they find the farmer murdered.
The deputies follow the tire tracks to the canyon that acts at as the border between the US and Mexico. They find out that the guys from the diner are not alone and they are building a bridge over the canyon for Cortez to cross over. The sheriff tells the FBI about this and tells him that he will try and stop him. With almost the whole town gone for a local team sporting event, the sheriff has to call on some other towns people to help blockade the town.
The movie is full of everything you need for an 80’s action movie; car chases, hand to hand fights and big shootouts. Usually I try and count the one liners but there were hardly any. It did seem that some of the other actors tried to make the movie more than what it was. What I mean by that is they were actually trying to “act”. It’s an action movie! All we require from actors in these movies is big explosions, gun fights and more explosions. Don’t bring in big name or semi big name actors and have them try and act.
After being off for awhile, Arnold still has it but the movie was lacking. Maybe he should have teamed up with another action star in this and it could have been better. Like I said, the movie is cheesy but not in a good way. This could be a good starting point for Arnold again to the action world. Let’s just hope that his future movies get a little better. You might wait for the cheap seats for this or the Red Box for this.
