When people see Piemonte on a wine label they usually think about Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Gavi and Moscato. Piemonte is much more though, from other native grapes such as Arnies and Dolcetto as well as international varieties such as Chardonnay and Merlot. With high quality expected from Piemontese wineries, the bar is set high and most wines are very well produced.
Arbetta Langhe Merlot, 2009 DOC is one such wine. Dark garnet red in the glass with aromas of black fruit, earth and leather get the mouth watering in anticipation. The palate pretty much follows the nose and has a rich full mouth feel. There is plenty of good acidity on the back making this a very food friendly wine. The firm tannins lead to a long dry finish.
Enjoy this with braised short ribs, osso bucco and even a nice steak fresh from the grill.
