Even horror has it share of false leads and pranks.
Perhaps one of the most hokey but eventually finding its way into remake anyway is Fred Walton's 1986 film, "April Fool's Day."
While everyone seems to want to be the ultimate prankster it seems that Muffy perhaps is the best even if its the most morbid. She invites her friends out to her family's island mansion for Spring Break prior to April Fool's. What follows seems to be her friend, Kit's worst nightmare.
Kit and her boyfriend begin realizing their friends are being eliminated one by one. They then discover that their friend Muffy has a psychotic identical twin named Buffy who has escaped a hospital for the criminally insane. Kit soon discovers (or thinks) she has that Muffy was killed before they ever arrived and Buffy has been pretending to be Muffy the entire time to kill them all.
After the horrible events of losing all of her friends Kit returns to the living room where everyone is alive and waiting on her. It's been a major prank. All of the dead bodies and severed heads were props made by a different friend of Muffy's who does special effects in Hollywood. She hopes to create a bed n' breakfast where a murder mystery plays out with the guests not knowing until the last minute who the killer is. Kit realizes that she is the only one who was not in on the gag.
At the end of the movie, the screen writers try to throw another surprise at the audience with a half drunk Muffy making her way back to her room to find a present on her bed....they shy quiet Nan sneaks up on her and slits her throat......is this a legit slasher end to the movie or is this a major farce intended to throw not just the characters in the movie but the audience as well?
