Apple in an effort to expand and prop up its mapping portfolio and incorporate more features to its Maps platform, acquired Embark. Founded in 2011, Embark developed a free Android and iOS apps to assist users to navigate public transit systems.
Jessica Lessin, an Apple spokeswoman, was quoted as saying, "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."
Step-by-step planning, offline functionality and notifications are also offered by this Embark app.
Apple, in July, agreed to acquire HopStop.com, an online transit-navigation service as well as Locationary which offers business-location maps. Earlier in 2013, Apple acquired WifiSLAM, a location-identifying technology maker.
Previously, mapping applications developed by Google for iPhones were used by Apple. This application was discarded when neither Google nor Apple could reach an agreement over voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation.
