Generally grouped on the “B” list of Shakespeare’s plays, Director Julia Rodriguez-Elliott and company have elevated “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” solidly to the “A” list with their first class production which opened on Saturday, September 14, 2013. Every aspect of this show is stunning. From the inventive staging, colorful costumes to the outstanding cast (some in multiple roles), impeccable diction and marvelous original music, A Noise Within’s “Pericles” offers an exquisite journey of delights!
Favorite ANW repertory member Deborah Strang (Gower) and her talented chorus lead the audience through Pericles’ adventures to many and varied lands. Angela Balogh Calin’s costumes help to establish each distinct “land.” Music composed by Robert Oriol, both instrumental and vocal, is seamlessly interwoven into the narrative. There is something for everyone in this show: shipwrecks, sword fights, dances, haunting melodies, romance, loves lost and found, joyful reunions, spectacle and a healthy sprinkling of humor.
Jason Dechert (young Pericles) and Thomas Tofel (old Pericles) win audience empathy with their sincere and heartfelt performances. Jules Willcox was fresh and appealing as Thaisa, the girl who wins Pericles' heart. Jonathan Lamer brought wonderful warmth to his portrayal of Lysimachus.
Each player shines bringing his or her character brilliantly to life. They are (in addition to those already mentioned) Stephen Rockwell, Jane Macfie, Simonides, Jill Hill, Sydney Berk, Seth Freed, Doug Harvey, Nicholas Jenkins, Chris Lanehart, Kristopher Lancowski, Jennifer Myers, Erin Scerbak and Katelyn Schiller.
“Pericles” can be a confusing play, with all its locations and characters. ANW’s thorough program notes help clarify the action, locations and characters nicely.
Southern California audiences are not likely to see a better production of “Pericles” anywhere, any time, so don’t miss it.
