Ah, to lord over an island community of anthropomorphic animal people… Yeah, Animal Crossing is pretty bizarre when you think about it, but even through the Wellsian connotations the sticking point of the series has always been the mellow, comfy atmosphere where socialization reigns and consumerism is a way of life, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf delivers on that in spades. It also expands on the series’ formula in several places, chief among them making you the mayor of your town to rationalize all of the community service work you’ve been doing over the course of the series while allowing for an added level of customization with just about everything in the game to help make your character, house, and town truly feel like your own. Some issues pop up with the changes made in the name of accessibility (simplified dialogue trees and the new thrift shop turning villagers’ houses into random mishmashes of furniture), but overall New Leaf is a definite net gain in terms of features and makes an excellent jumping-on point for those looking to try the series for the first time.
