Anchor Brewing, Merry Christmas-Happy New Year 2013

Anchor Brewing, Merry Christmas-Happy New Year 2013, 5.5%abv. is dark brown in the class with a thin dark tan head. Anchor Brewing has been making this special Ale since 1975; every year the brewers make a special recipe to celebrate the holiday season. The nose on the 2013 is roasted malt with molasses and baking spices. Malt is predominant on the palate with notes of gingerbread and some hops and a hint of caramel on the finish. This is a very well made and well-balanced beer. Many brewers rely on using increased malt to make their brews too sweet and sticky. This year’s version of the Merry Christmas-Happy New Year Ale would go great with a rich beef stew, with some of the beer added to the pot, I think I would prefer to drink it on it’s own sitting out on a cool evening.
