What would you do if you were the last person earth? For seventeen-year-old Tora Reynolds the only thing that she wants to do is find a way to get off of it. 'Burn Out', Kristi Helvig's debut novel is a exciting story that will keep you captivated until the very last page. The very first sentence had me hooked.

After the sun turns into a 'red giant' the earth becomes uninhabitable. All of the survivors have left to make a new home on the newly discovered planet Caelia. Everyone except Tora. For the last six months, Tora has been holed up in an underground shelter, her brilliant scientist father murdered, her mother and sister burned to death under the scorching sun. The only thing to keep her company are the bio-energetic weapons her father created. Soon Tora is fighting for her life as a once trusted friend, Marcus, and a band of mercenaries show up to take the weapons in order to sell them to the highest bidder. But they aren't the only ones seeking to free Tora of the deadly weapons. Government ships soon descend on the small group and are ready to kill them all in order to get their hands on the weapons. In order to escape the unrelenting government attack Tora forges an alliance with Marcus and his mercenaries she has to make a decision between saving herself by handing over the weapons or honoring her father's last request to keep the most lethal weapons in existence out of the hands of the Government and save humanity.

Kristi does a great job describing the total isolation that is felt by Tora at the beginning. I could really imagine what it would be like to be the last person on a dying planet. Kristi then does a great job of pulling you completely off guard and straight into non-stop action that will leave your heart racing and you wishing Tora could go back to the simple and quiet life in isolation. Throughout the entire book you want to see Tora make it through and finally make it off the planet and find her way to Caelia, but you also don't know who else to root for. I genuinely can't wait to get my hands on the next book in this action packed series.
