In a thriller, one does not expect to start out laughing.
However, that is just what happens during the opening scene of the Company Theatre’s darkly comical thriller, ‘Deathtrap’ which performs its final weekend from Thursday, October 17 through Sunday, October 20! All performances will take place at the Company Theatre, 30 Accord Park Drive in Norwell, Massachusetts. Visit www.companytheatre.com for more information!
Sidney Bruhl, played masterfully by Jeff Gill, is a grumbly, ambitious, but down on his luck thriller writer who is looking for his next big idea. He thinks he may have found it in a naïve, young writing student, Clifford Anderson, but things are never what they seem.
Brendan Mulhern portrays Clifford Anderson with charm and rugged subtlety. Company’s Theatre’s very own manager and choreographer, Sally Forrest makes a refreshing appearance as the mysterious Helga Ten Dorp. Danny Bolton rounds out the cast as quirky Porter Milgrim.
‘Deathtrap,’ a play by Ira Levin and directed by Peter A. Carey, is peppered with a wealth of sharp and oftentimes darkly humorous dialogue. Myra Buhl, played by Kelly Griffin, is Sidney’s loving and hopeful wife. Kelly Griffin portrays Myra with an excitable quality and a warm smile. Jeff Gill as Sidney and Kelly Griffin as Myra, through easy interactions such as a brush on the shoulder or the exchange of a sweet glance, have a natural chemistry. It easy to believe they are a devoted couple. However, mounting tension and startling moments build the Hitchcockian feel of this production.
What was equally as startling was the wonderfully crafted and highly functional set designed by Company Theatre co-founder Zoe Bradford. The audience also gave a collective gasp when the set appeared. The seemingly warm and cozy setting is a depiction of a stable converted into a study, equipped with a functioning fireplace. Fine detail such as hanging chandeliers and built in bookcases embellish the play’s tone. The distinct set furniture was on loan from Landing Antiques, 95 Broad Street, Weymouth, Massachusetts.
