Also starring Derek Lee and collaborator Clif Prowse the film follows the two as they head on the road traveling across the globe in search of the ultimate documented vacation. Lee is having problems scoring with the international ladies and also has to deal with an unforeseen medical condition that has his family worried. None of that matters as he meets Audrey a mysterious woman with a deadly secret. Soon after their encounter things start to happen to Derek and the only one there to help him is Clif. Sensing they both may be in danger they continue to document their experience which provides us a first hand look at the creation of a monster.

We would hate to spoil this film but it is so hard not to do so. Trailers and word of mouth do no justice for this film as clearly those who saw it at the festivals knew that Afflicted would garner such a reaction. In the scope of found footage films a majority of what you see has been done before thanks to constant use of the “Chronicle Theory” (the film Chronicle has a special effect that everyone uses now.) What stands out from the others for Afflicted is this is not the tale of a group of kids lost in the woods being stalked by some mythical creature. What we have here is a full detailed documentation on the creation of the monster. In other words there is no escaping the impending horrors of this film as you yourself become apart of Derek’s transformation.

Afflicted is the found footage genres answer to An American Werewolf in London! Hearing that should provide an contiguous reaction in that horror induced brain of yours to the tone of Afflicted. There is plenty of humor, blood, and gore to appease any indie horror geek but enough substance in plot and execution to appeal to the mainstream fan as well. Afflicted will be talked about for some time as it has the chance to usher in a new era of thought to a sub genre of horror deemed “sparkly” in recent times.

The true downfalls of the film only exist when Derek is at a crossroads and chooses to be stubborn. It happens often in the film but is spread out enough to not be a nuisance upon viewing. That does not mean you won’t be telling yourself “why won't this dude just go to the hospital?” over and over. It of course adds to the appeal of Afflicted though I’m sure some folks will be displeased with the effort. There is also a superhero type feel to the film which could be very polarizing for horror purists as well. This is a very entertaining and fun film so those things can easily be overlooked to enjoy the full overall experience, The sentiment has been validated that yes Afflicted is truly one of the top must see films of 2014 for all horror fans!

Afflicted is directed by and stars Derek Lee and Clif Prowse. It is now available on demand and in select theaters across the country. For a list of the theaters showing Afflicted or on demand outlets carrying the title go here. Afflicted is being released courtesy of CBS Films.
