Thanks to its blue ribbon cast and early awards buzz, movie fans have been eager to see "American Hustle," which opened in wide release this weekend. It does not disappoint, so put on your polyester pants, overcurl your hair and prepare for two hours of fun.
"American Hustle" is set in New Jersey in the 1970s and stars Christian Bale as Irving Rosenfeld, a con artist and father who works with his partner, Sydney Prosser (played by Amy Adams). They are busted by Richie DiMaso (played by Bradley Cooper), an ambitious but unethical FBI agent who uses them to help bring down corrupt politicians, such as Carmine Polito (played by Jeremy Renner). Although Irving is married to the unpredictable Rosalyn (played by Jennifer Lawrence), he is in love with Sydney. Things gets complicated when Richie falls for her.
"American Hustle" is directed by David O. Russell, who does a great job recreating the era. The clothes, songs, and cars are all very authentic.
The cast of this film is amazing. Christian Bale is excellent in the lead role. He does a great job with his character's accent. Also, he is very funny as he is stuck with a bad comb over and has to work hard to cover the bald spots. Amy Adams is equally good as Sydney, who often talks with a fake English accent as part of her act. Bradley Cooper gives one of his best performances as the ill-tempered FBI agent. Jennifer Lawrence does great work as Rosalyn, who hates Sydney since she knows about her relationship with Irving.
"American Hustle" is well-worth seeing for its great story and first-rate cast. Recovering smokers beware, however, as cigarettes are in the movie a lot.
