On Sunday December 8, 2013 Joe Bonamassa shredded the Reno Events Center (REC) in downtown Reno. The show was first scheduled for Saturday the 7th, but due to bad weather coming over the hill, it was moved to Sunday the 8th.
Attendance was still good , Bonamassa fans would not miss his show no matter what.
Smokin' Joe played two sets. The first being an acoustic set, which in this examiners opinion was the better set. Then came the electric set, don't get me wrong, both sets were off the hook .
Bonamassa is an a amazing guitarist, he does things on a guitar that I thought were not even possible.
Joe Bonamassa is an American blues rock guitarist and singer. He began his career playing guitar in the band Bloodline, which also featured the offspring of Miles Davis, Robby Krieger of The Doors, and Berry Oakley of The Allman Brothers Band.
He released his first solo album A New Day Yesterday in 2000, and has since released nine more solo studio albums, six live albums and nine live DVDs, along with three albums with the band Black Country Communion, one with funk super-group Rock Candy Funk Party and two albums in collaboration with vocalist Beth Hart.
He tours the world regularly, and has developed a large following in the U.S. and U.K.
His most recent album, Driving Towards The Daylight, reached #2 on the U.K. Top 40 Albums Chart, and he completed an arena tour there in 2012.
In 2009 he was the recipient of the Classic Rock Magazine "Breakthrough Artist of the Year" award, and The Guardian said of him: "the 35-year-old from upstate New York has consolidated a reputation as the pre-eminent blues-rock guitarist of his generation".
Bonamassa has collaborated with numerous artists, including B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Blondie Chaplin, Beth Hart, Paul Rodgers, Leslie West, Jon Lord, Vince Gill, Sandi Thom and Glenn Hughes. He also played with Hughes in Black Country Communion, along with Jason Bonham and Derek Sherinian.
Current members include,
(Acoustic set), Joe Bonamassa-(guitar, vocals), Gerry O’Connor-(Irish fiddle, mandolin, Irish banjo), Mats Wester-(Nyckelharpa), Derek Sherinian-(keyboards) and Lenny Castro-(percussion).
(Electric set), Joe Bonamassa-(guitar, vocals), Carmine Rojas-(bass), Tal Bergman-(drums), Derek Sherinian-(keyboards) and Lenny Castro-(percussion).
The first set (acoustic) lasted around 60 minutes and went like this,
"Woke Up Dreaming", "Seagull" (Bad Company cover), "Jelly Roll" (Charles Mingus cover), "Black Lung Heartache", "Around the Bend", "Jockey Full of Bourbon" (Tom Waits cover), "Stones in My Passway" (Robert Johnson cover), "Ball Peen Hammer" (Chris Whitley cover) and "Athens to Athens".
The second set (electric) lasted well over 90 minutes and went like this,
"Dust Bowl", "Who's Been Talking" (Howlin’ Wolf cover), "Midnight Blues" (Gary Moore cover), "Dislocated Boy", "Driving Towards the Daylight", "Slow Train", "Look Over Yonder's Wall" (James "Beale Street" Clark cover), "Sloe Gin" (Tim Curry cover), "The Ballad of John Henry" and two encore songs, "Django" & "Mountain Time".
From the very first song to the last, Bonamassa tore it up on stage, he is by far one of the best guitarist that this examiner has ever seen, and I have seen a lot.
It's been awhile since this examiner has shot a show at the REC, but I can still say, "It is Reno's premier venue. Great shows, great sound, great seating and most importantly for me being a photographer, great lighting". To see what's next at the REC (click here)
A good time was had by all.
