You all have that friend whose opinion you can trust when they suggest you go see a certain movie, right. So, when I heard my roommate laughing from the living room at a movie that had been left on I knew it had to be good if she was laughing out loud to it. I didn’t expect as I turned the corner to find out it was the film Pitch Perfect. Now, I know this one’s an older film, but allow me to go on a bit about this one because it’s been on constant repeat at the house and for good reason.
Looking back on trailers I should’ve known this one would be a home-run, just look at the comedy gold cast; Rebel Wilson, Anna Kendrick and Adam DeVine (for the Workaholics fans out there). With Rebel and Anna teamed up you have a background of Bridesmaids and Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, personal favorites that introduced me to these two , and combined into this quirky, Glee-like movie you’ll find yourself laughing at the one liners for weeks to come.
Anna plays Beca, the hard-edge, if you can call adding a tattoo and a gauge earring hard-edge, college freshman who wants nothing more than to ditch Barden University with its above average number of a cappella groups and high tail it to LA to follow her dream of making music. Once dorm mate and Barden Bella singer Chloe (Brittany Snow) catches her singing in the shower though plans change as she joins up with the motley crew of singers that make up the newest recruits of the Barden Bella group, Rebel Wilson included.
Their goal is to perform and win at the end of the year Nationals competition and that includes out “aca-ing” rival male group the Treble Makers. As they train we see them get into “aca” battle offs at college parties, somehow I missed out on those in my college days, and work out sessions meant for track teams that have now inspired my new work out of choice, horizontal running, we have Rebel to thank for that one! And just when you think you’ve got a new list of zingers to add to your repertoire the movie hands us the commentating duo of Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins at the Nationals competition that makes you wish they’d been around for “peanut gallery commentary” during all the beer bong games in college.
Talks about a sequel have me anticipating being the old woman hiding in the back row of the theatre to see it, but then again maybe I’m someone else’s “trusted movie opinion-er” and will have a partner in what is surely likely to be another case where after seeing the movie I think it’s ok to sing out loud in public. Trust me, my voice is not one of those, so be glad that lately it’s just been confined to my house; sorry roommates.
