Tucked in among the crowd of jumbled food pockets by downtown Berkeley, Almare can be easily missed. Luckily, due to this very fact, it is perfectly situated for enjoying a bowl of gelato peacefully with a café view of passersby. The tables are flimsy and close together, squeezed in between the entrance and the coolers generating a snug seating arrangement, as most foot traffic coming in stays on foot and generally avoids overcrowding.
Almare sources its ingredients from local suppliers to ensure its freshness and economy. A medium size bowl runs at 3.50 which is fair for the ample size and quality of flavor. Flavors at Almare change with the seasons and old favorites will have to make way for newer ones which they keep displayed on a small board beckoning people in. That the gelato is made fresh on the premises every morning is just an added bonus to those who know enough to pass up the $1 scoop at John’s to splurge here. Cone lovers need not compromise crunchy counterparts as Almare has sugar cones for their cold sweets and many hot treats as well with a very popular ‘hot chocolate’. As winter creeps up to the Bay Area there are a few prime days left to enjoy gelato, but with all that Almare has to offer it is definitely a place that friends and neighbors can enjoy all year round.
