Album review: Churchill 'Happy/Sad'

Fans of Denver indie band Churchill will be glad to know that their long-awaited debut full-length album Happy/Sad is slated for release on February 11.

Churchill first began turning heads in the Denver music scene nearly two years ago with a sound perhaps best classified as acoustic indie-rock, with just a hint of bluegrass (thanks to a high-profile mandolin in the mix), garnering even more attention by placing next to two veteran acts in the Top 3 bands in the 2009 Hometown for the Holidays competition.  Since then, they’ve continued to solidify their collective voice and build their fan base. The resulting album Happy/Sad, in fact, represents a culmination of both their evolution as a band and their growing popularity (the album was largely funded by fans through a campaign on Kickstarter.com).

As the album’s title suggests, Happy/Sad explores the gamut of emotions, mainly in the context of relationships.  By far, the record’s greatest strength is in the songs themselves, with cleverly crafted lyrics and melodies that stay in your head long after the record stops playing. High points on the album include “We Used to Be Happy,” “The President,” and the album’s first single “Miles,” currently available on iTunes. Fans who make a point of going to Churchill shows will recognize these and other songs on the record, but the band managed to keep a few surprises hidden up their sleeves as well, including the haunting ballad “Think It Over” in the middle of the track list.

Besides the songwriting, Churchill has done a great job of keeping their unique sound intact on this record, resisting the temptation to over-produce.  Between the songs and the sound, Churchill has put both of their best feet forward, delivering a recording that deserves to go far beyond the Denver area.  The record is called Happy/Sad—but make no mistake, this record will make you happy.

If you’re in the Denver area around February 11, be sure to catch Churchill’s CD release show at the Hi-Dive, 7 S. Broadway in Denver.
