Akira Kurosawa's Dreams

Akira Kurosawa's Dreams was a very creative, brilliant, colorful, imaginative and inventive film. Many words are connected to this film, it's a masterpiece in it's own right. Some say it's not a film for everyone but I think it should be. Don't be close minded when you see it, it's a 2 hr film odyssey, with it's imaginative colors and the interesting plots. I like how he used Japanese folklore and by the way it's an 8 part short film collection. Read my thoughts on each of these short films.

Sunshine Through Rain

I liked the concept of this one which is based on the Japanese legend about when the sun is shining through rain, foxes have their weddings which a little boy catches it and has to ask forgivness from the foxes or he dies.  My first thought was this is kind of odd but yet I really enjoyed it and would like to learn more about Japanses legends and folklore.

The Peach Orchard

Very beautiful, full of color, this one is about a little boy who begs for the peach blossoms to come back. It is about the doll festival and has a great message about preserving nature. I love the dances, costumes and the art in this segment.

The Blizzard

I have to say this one is my favorite out of them, men are stuck on a mountain and can't find their camp because of a bad snow storm. A spirit of a woman tries to kill them by giving them warmth and give up. I don't know but I really liked this one.

    The Tunnel

One of the nightmare ones and I'll admit it kind of freaked me out. A man is waking down a tunnel and he sees dead soldiers and a demon-like dog. Creepy but yet still has the beauty in it like the other ones. I think that the faces scared me the most.

    Crows

As an art fan I adore this one, an art student and Van Gogh talk about art while they are inside his art works. What is very interesting is how Martin Scorsese played Van Gogh.

    Mount Funji in Red

Another one of the nightmare ones, a nuclear plant near Mount Funji begins to have a melt down and the citizens run for their lives even though they know they will die anyway. The use of color in it is amazing with the reds.

    The Weeping Demon

The last of the nightmares and it was quite odd about apocalyptic worlds were you can hear the agony of mutilating humans and dandelions. Wasn't my favorite out of the series.

    Village of the Watermills

The last one and is it beautiful, I like the plot, these people decide to leave modern technology and live in a cleaner, happier society. Another one with great music and traditional dance.

So if you haven't seen it I hope maybe you will after reading this article. It's a work of beauty, the coloring in each segment is artistic and the plots are so creative that it probably makes people wish they would have thought of this film.
