Horror films rarely deliver anything new these days with tons of them coming out all the time. Now that Chiller TV has become pretty successful, they have started producing original movies for their channel with one of them being Ghoul starring Nolan Gould of Modern Family.
Ghoul follows a group of young friends who set out to stop whatever is behind a rash of mysterious disappearances. First and foremost you have to watch this movie for what it was a straight to TV film. This film was an original film that debuted on the network Chiller before being released to home video. With that being said it really doesn’t help this film all that much. At first it feels like a Goonies type vibe with a horror twist but quickly dissolves pretty quickly. They do a lot of build up for something that never really delivers anything you expect. Sometimes that’s a good thing, but here it just makes the film feel like a waste of time. The performances are all average at best, with them really pushing lead kid Nolan Gould from Modern Family. Given he is a little kid and could be spoiled from his funny brainless character from the series, but here he just didn’t work all that well. There are numerous moments in the story that feel forced and unnecessary for what the real purpose of the film was.
This felt more like an after school special with the attempt to add a monster, sort of, to make it something more, but never really delivers anything. This would have been much better as a part of the Goosebumps film series, but probably would have been better made.
