Despite many beliefs to the contrary, affordable dining in Maui is possible. Although there are a number of expensive (and delicious) restaurants in Hawaii, Maui in particular, if you do your research you can find some great budget friendly restaurants. The Aloha Mixed Plate is one of those restaurants. The Aloha Mixed plate also happens to be oceanfront and offers outdoor dining with an amazing view.
The Aloha Mixed Plate is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily and they offer a happy hour from 2-6pm. Even if you can't make it for happy hour, the menu and drinks are priced affordably especially given the view. One thing to note is that the restaurant can get very crowded, so arrive early and plan on a wait as they don't take reservations.
The menu is both interesting and unique and many of the items have an Asian influence, specifically a Korean and/or Japanese touch. The menu also offers some traditional Hawaiian fare like lau lau, kalua pig sandwich and poi beef stew as well as classic American dishes like ceasar salad and cheeseburgers.
For something truly unique, start out by trying the furikake fries as an appetizer. A basket of warm, crispy french fries is topped with garlic butter and furikake, a seaweed mixture. As far as main dishes go, standouts include items like the Shoyu chicken, chow fun noodles, or the fresh fish of the day. They also offer mixed plates that come with a taste of many different items on the menu like the "aloha mixed plate", named after the restaurant itself and their most famous dish. The aloha mixed plate entree comes with shoyu chicken, fresh fish, and teriyaki beef.
There are plenty of tropical drink and bar specialties available at The Aloha Mixed Plate as well. Stop in during happy hour for $2 Mai Tai's, or enjoy a fruity pina colada or the "sassy wahine", which is a mango margarita with swirls of strawberry and sweet and sour plum powder.
