Adam Sweeney & The Jamboree at The Plough & Stars: May 28th, 2011

Here is something you probably don't know, but will wish you had: Portland-based folk-rock band Adam Sweeney & The Jamboree stopped by San Francisco last Saturday, May 28th, playing their first-ever SF set at The Plough & Stars, and it was truly an enjoyable night of music from this talented group of musicians (who, incidentally, were in the midst of their first-ever west coast tour).

But where were you? You probably weren't there, and it probably had something to do with the fact that it was one of those cold, blustery late spring nights that make your teeth chatter and your bones scream to stay inside under a blanket. Welcome to San Francisco in May! The streets seemed eerily empty that night, so lets give you a pass this time. Next time Adam Sweeney & co. come to town, though? You should go—and bring all your friends.

A far cry from the pretentious hipster-indie/garage bands around San Francisco these days, Adam Sweeney & The Jamboree play gorgeous, melodic folk music. Sometimes it is traditional, sometimes more Irish, and at others they foray into rock—a wide range of styles that only works due to the excellent musicianship of each member.

Adam Sweeney's voice is beautiful, sounding at times much like Paul Simon or Glenn Tilbrook (of Toad The Wet Sprocket). Listening to him sing was a pleasure, as was watching bassist Zachary Pace bliss out, eyes closed, "in the zone" and passionate about the music they were creating together. And who doesn't love a band with an accordian? By the end of the night, Your Examiner became convinced that accordian lessons were absolutely necessary. Maybe.

Lets hope these friendly and talented guys make their way back to SF again soon, because they definitely deserve a bigger audience and another opportunity to share their art with the folk of the Bay. Here is a promise: as soon as another date is scheduled, you can bet there will be a post about it right here on this page.
