If Austin is the “Live Music Capital of the World,” then Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater (ACL Live) is the capital of Austin.
The venue started operations in 2010 and already hosts some 100 concerts each year, in addition to being the home studio for the PBS TV series “Austin City Limits,” which is the longest-running music show in American television history. The facility is located in downtown Austin on Willie Nelson Boulevard. Willie himself even performs at the venue each New Years Eve, a tradition that has become one of the city's most sought-after tickets during the holiday season.
The venue is a modern marvel, seating 2,750, without a bad seat in the house. Incredibly, no seat in the theater is more than 75 feet from the front of the stage. The sound system is incredible. It feels like you're sitting on the stage, surrounded by the highest quality speakers available. Even when a concert is at full capacity, which it almost always is, the entry lines, food lines, drink lines and even restroom lines are no-waiting. Thoughtfully, there's even high-fidelity sound in the restrooms, with sound quality better than some venues themselves. An open-air mezzanine-level foyer gives pleasing views of downtown, allowing concert-goers to enjoy some fresh air, while sipping a drink, shopping for merch, or just soaking in the ambiance of the venue.
ACL Live is conveniently located next to the W Austin Hotel, where many of the visiting artists choose to stay while in town. The lobby bar at the W is a hot-spot after shows, with music fans sharing in the camaraderie of the mutual enjoyment of great music, and sharing their favorite parts of the show they just witnessed.
As the home to the Austin City Limits TV show, the venue hosts tapings during the TV season. Free passes are distributed through a lottery system.
ACL Live is truly a part of Austin music history -- and it will be for many years to come.
