The second day of Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival began much like Friday with hot, humid weather. That all changed after the sun went down and chilly winds from a cold front moved in. The weather may have caught some festival goers ill-prepared, but Examiner was ready. We caught Wilco displaying musical excellence at the Samsung Galaxy Stage performing in their traditional sun down slot. We watched The Cure and Robert Smith sound like it was still the 80s as they played many of their hits early in the set. Our photographer, Suzanne Cordeiro snapped some fantastic shots of buzz band, Haim. She also grabbed great photos of Kendrick Lamar, Wilco and The Cure.
Saturday for us was all about grabbing a good spot to watch two-time ACL Festival veterans Wilco perform. The band must like playing Austin as they are scheduled to perform next weekend at the festival and a late night show on Friday, October 11 at Stubb's BBQ. The show is sold out. The band has recorded several shows at ACL TV and they seem to feel at home in the Live Music Capital.
We managed to gain access to the stage riser which put us in a great vantage point to see Wilco run through an hour long set that included "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart", "Art of Almost" and "Impossible Germany." The latter song featured an extended solo by guitarist Nels Cline that just kills us every time we have seen it performed. Yesterday was no exception. Be sure to check out the photos in the slideshow.
The Cure capped the evening by rolling out hits, "Pictures of You", "Lovesong" and "Just Like Heaven" in the first 30 minutes of the set which gives an indication of how the rest of the show went. A stiff wind blew in a brisk bit of cold air while front man Robert Smith sported gray hair in his mop of curls but sounded much like he did when the band was breaking musical ground in the 80s. The band played an extended seven song encore that featured hits, "Let's Go to Bed" and "Boys Don't Cry." The entire set list in below.
