Kanye West Nashville Yeezus Concert

It has taken me over a week to marinate on the Yeezus Nashville tour experience on Thanksgiving Eve. Music City’s access was granted with the 36 year old, Chicago native rapper, Kanye West stopping at Bridgestone Arena .

The stage set was absolutely AMAZING and unique like no other show I had seen before DONDA (Kanye’s creative company) is definitely in a league of its own! I felt like we were being told a story chapter by chapter and Ye painted the picture ever so vividly with the aesthetics, choreography, fashion statements with his masks and dancers and lyrics as only he can. The show even offered mountains, monsters, flashing lights, a change of seasons with smoke, fire and even snow towards the end.

Kanye entered the stage with the intro to his new Yeezus album moving the crowd with “On Sight,” “Black Skinhead,” “New Slaves,” “I Am a God,” “I’m In It”, and “Blood on the Leaves” to name a few.
Of course he mixed the show up with some favorites from his old albums: Graduation, Watch The Throne, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, 808s and Heartbreak, Late Registration, and The College Dropout.

Throughout the show we definitely loved the fact he included crowd participation with his new songs like: New Slaves, Blood on the Leaves, Monster and many of his old favorites like Jesus Walks, Can’t Tell Me Nothing, and Flashing Lights. I adored the tribute he did to his mother Donda West with his "Coldest Winter" track. (Check it out here.)

As the show went on I was engaged and wondering what barrier or fresh idea he would showcase next. Of course, the moment of truth did arrive when he went on a Kanye rant as only he can after talking about his dreams. CHECK THE RANT HERE. He touched on the topic of Nike to talk about his treatment with the company trying to marginalize his creativity, corporations and media trying to keep him in a box, and how important it was for him to follow his dreams.

West spoke saying:

"Do you know who the head of Nike is?" West asked the crowd as he prowled back and forth on an arrowhead-shaped stage in a white mask. "No? Well let me tell you who he is: His name is Mark Parker, and he just lost culture. Everyone at Nike, everyone at Nike, Mark Parker just let go of culture."

"I'm talking directly to you. No miscommunication," West said. "Did you not want the Yeezys? Nike would make you believe it was my fault that you couldn't get them, but that was not the case. I wanted there to be as many Yeezys as there was LeBrons. And I wanted them to be at a good price, but that was not my choice, and we're going to change everything. And ... I'm going to create more than you think that any musician in the history of time ever could have."

West also put his displeasure into song to the delight of the crowd, noting with the help of Auto-tune and piano in the background that even though Nike wouldn't take his call, other forward-thinking companies will.

"I talked to the head of Disney today," West sang. "And I talked to the head of Louis Vuitton today. I swear to God on my life, I talked to them both today. I swear to God I talked to them both, and they wished me a Happy Thanksgiving. I said, 'I want to talk about something that isn't Turkey Day. I want to talk about something different. I want to talk about dreaming.' "

After the eye catching moment of the show I felt like I was more in tune with Kanye’s thoughts and why it is important for him as an artist to have a VOICE and be heard in other business ventures.

Next, things turned for the better once Jesus came out of the mountains to a praying Kanye with his 12 dancers. This is when Kanye finally took off his mask and then performed Jesus Walks and some of other favorites from “The College Dropout.”

It was like we witnessed a rebirth of the old Kanye we fell in love with from day one. Kanye is definitely setting the bar high and he left an impressionable mark on the city with his show! Definitely one concert I will remember 20 years from now.
