The zombie craze continues with new takes on the genre coming out all the time. Almost everything you can think of has been done so now it is becoming more about execution and creativity than anything else. The latest, About A Zombie looks to through in the found footage aspect with some comedy thrown in to take the horror to in another direction, but does it manage to bring it all together in a way that delivers on the brain eating fun or will it need to be laid to rest once and for all?
About A Zombie follows a working class Irish family is caught up in a zombie invasion of Dublin, Ireland. When their son, becomes a zombie the family chooses to take care of him in the home much to the chagrin of the neighbors and the local crime boss. Meanwhile, they've invited an American documentarian to film their situation and the film crew is caught up in the mayhem. It’s hard to find something new with the zombie genre, but this film does its best. The story is a bit all over the place at times, but overall ended up being pretty fun overall. The film bounces back and forth trying to focus on the documentary side, while also slowly building the zombie invasion aspect but really should have just focused more on the family stuff. This part of the film and that of the towns people clearly having issues was a smart story choice and opens up a lot of direction to go. As they brought a heavier zombie presence it somewhat loses the originality of it all and ends up falling in line to become pretty generic.
Of course with these movies you can ignore a lot of issues if they deliver on the zombie gore action and they do for the most part. There are some disturbingly bizarre moments including a lady cutting pieces of herself off to feed a zombie as well as some decent gory kills. The looks of the zombies is pretty generic, but works fine for what they are going for. Hardcore fans of the zombie genre will likely have some fun here, while others may get lost in the shuffle.
