There are few movies that are based on video games that have ever managed to really work with the exception of a couple like the Resident Evil franchise and Mortal Kombat. Now the latest to get the treatment is the popular car game Need For Speed hoping to cash in on the Fat and Furious popularity, but with Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul at the helm can it shift into a high enough gear to make it get past the finish line or will it stall out?

Need For Speed follows a young street racer who is framed by a wealthy business associate and sent to prison. Once out he is released he joins a secret cross country race with revenge in mind, but when his ex-partner, learns of the plan, he places a massive bounty on his head as the race begins. This is the kind of popcorn movie that you have to just shut off your brain and sit back and enjoy the ride. The story is nothing that hasn’t been done in some way thousands of times, but works well enough to keep things moving no matter how silly it is at times. Aaron Paul goes all in and is clearly having a great time showcasing his unsurprising ability to be a leading man. Michael Keaton steps onto the screen in this unique role where he is pretty much in the scenes alone every time you see him, but still manages to be the most entertaining with his over the top performance. Sadly the rest of the cast is hit and miss with most of them a bit annoying or throwaway characters. Thankfully none of that really matters as this is a racing movie pure and simple. It is over the top and crazy with the amount of on road destruction is caused, but when you are watching a movie based on this subject matter you should expect no less. While the main race doesn’t take place until the last 20 minutes or so of the film, the rest is filled with plenty of car-fu style action that is sure to please any car enthusiast or fan of action.

This is an old school action movie that doesn’t use any annoying CGI to pull things off, but instead gets the cars on the actual road and lets the speed and destruction take over. Anyone expecting more than just an exciting popcorn racing movie is a fool. This film doesn’t pretend to be anything more than it is and if you can accept that you will no doubt have a lot of fun.
